In the historic and vibrant area of the former French Concession in Shanghai, the théATRE / TEA PASTRY 03 project, designed by Studio RAMOPRIMO, is housed in a charming early 20th-century brick building. The renovation, which transforms the space into a modern pastry shop and tea room, skilfully plays with the dialogue between the industrial memory of the structure and a refined contemporary style.
The design concept is based on contrast and material balance: the existing structural elements, such as exposed reinforced concrete pillars and beams, provide a neutral and raw backdrop. This skeleton is contrasted by the sculptural purity of the central counter, the true focal point of the space, characterised by its massive shape and delicate light blue tones.
In this balance of contrasts, the choice of ceramic surfaces plays an aesthetic and functional connecting role. To enhance the position and massive shape of the counter, concrete-effect tiles were selected, echoing the industrial texture of the context. These slabs, despite their material simplicity, are used to create a distinctive pattern that surrounds the bar like a “precious carpet”.
